Avanhard Stadium (Uzhhorod) History

Uzhgorod Stadium is a 1952 built municipally owned multi-purpose arena which has been home to the local football team ever since opening, with the resident team today known as FC Hoverla Uzhhorod originally established as Spartak Uzhhorod back in 1946. The basic form of the ground with four stands hasn’t changed greatly since opening with the perimeter of the pitch still surrounded by an Athletics track.

The Stadium’s name “Avanhard” translates into English as Vanguard and was originally constructed by the Soviet Sports Society of Industrial Workers. The purpose was to give members of the trade union an opportunity to get involved with either playing or supporting football, which was a sport growing in popularity with other stadiums also constructed in the cities of Luhansk and Lutsk.

Avanhard Uzhhorod underwent significant renovations in 2005 in order to modernise the ageing facilities with colourful yellow and blue plastic seating installed to not only reflect the Ukrainian flag but to give the stadium a less drab appearance. An improved electronic scoreboard was added as well as brighter flood lights with FC Hoverla signing a 25 lease agreement with the local council during the 2012/2013 season.

To date, Avanhard Stadium is yet to host any European Football with Hoverla Uzhhorod failing to qualify for UEFA Competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League (Formerly known as the UEFA Cup). The ground has however hosted a match of the Ukrainian national team, with Hungary defeating the Ukraine 3-1 in the home nation’s first ever international on 29th April 1992.
