Bukit Jalil National Stadium History

Bukit Jalil National Stadium was built as the centrepiece of the 1998 Commonwealth Games which was awarded to the city of Kuala Lumpur. Officially inaugurated on 1st January by the Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the Commonwealth Games was held between the 11th and 21st September.

Constructed over a period of three years at a cost of RM 800 million the stadium became the de facto home of the Malaysian national team essentially alleviating Shah Alam and Merdeka Stadium of rotational hosting duties.

Designed by Arkitek FAA and built by United Engineers Asia three months ahead of schedule, Bukit Jalil Stadium is multi-purpose by design although it has predominantly been used to host football matches since opening.

In 2007 Bukit Jalil National Stadium was selected as one of eight venues of the AFC Asian Cup. Hosted by four countries in total: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, Bukit Jalil hosted six matches of Group C, a quarter final and semi-final match between South Korea and tournament Champions Iraq.

As the largest sports venue in Malaysia, Bukit Jalil National Stadium has become a popular destination for European football clubs. One of the first examples of this was the 2003 FA Premier League Asia Cup which featured Newcastle United, Birmingham, Chelsea and the Malaysian National Team.
