DY Patil Stadium History

Capable of accommodating 55,000 fans per event, DY Patil Stadium is the second largest Cricket grounds in India, and one of the most modern stadiums in the country. Naturally oval shaped, the three-tiered stands follow the contours of the boundary without the inclusion of an athletics track.

Designed by Hafeez Contractor who is regarded as one Indian’s leading architects. Sometimes referred to as a “starchitect”, the stadium features comfortable bucket style seating and a fully-cantilevered roof which ensures that spectators have excellent sightliness throughout.

Since 2014 it has been home to Mumbai City F.C who are one of eight franchises to join the newly formed Indian Super League. When football matches are played a rectangle is marked out on the grass, and the cricket field becomes an international standard football pitch.

To date the only level of football played at DY Patil Stadium has been the matches of the Indian Super League. During the 2014 season it hosted the Championship final between Atlético de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters FC, however it will soon host International Football.

DY Patil Stadium is set to become one of six venues for the Under 17s World Cup which will be hosted across Indian in 2017.
