Estadio Azul History

Estadio Azul first opened way back in 1947, and was used as the home of the Mexican National Soccer Team between 1947 and 1955 before the construction of the much larger Estadio Azteca.

It was originally built as an American Football Stadium, although the first soccer match was held between Veracruz and Argentinian side Racing de Avellaneda on 5th January 1947.

After Cruz Azul officially made the stadium their home in 1996 it became known as Estadio Azul, and the club undertook significant renovations to the ground. The matchday facilities for the players and referees were improved, and additional executive facilities were added as well as more comfortable seating throughout.

Interestingly Estadio Azul was not involved in either of Mexico’s World Cup matches despite having a prime location in the capital city. The Mexican Football association cited the grounds age, traffic levels and lack of parking as the main factors in its omission.
