Estadio Cuauhtémoc History

Estadio Cuauhtémoc was constructed for the 1968 Olympic Games, however with Mexico set to host the 1970 World Cup, stadium planners certainly had one eye on the football tournament in two years time whilst building the ground. Designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez who also was responsible for the iconic Estadio Azteca, construction remarkably took 500 days with workers required to put in 16-18 hour shifts a day in order to ensure it was ready on time for the Summer Olympics.

The inaugural football match and to a lesser extent, the unofficial opening ceremony, was held between Mexico and Czech Republic on October 6th 1968 just before the Summer Olympics began. Resulting in a 1-1, the inaugural league match was later held between resident side Puebla F.C and Club America.

Initially built with a capacity of 35,000, Estadio Cuauhtémoc was the third largest venue of the World Cup ahead of Estadio Nou Camp and Estadio Luis Dosal although it only hosted matches of the group stages. Designated as home to the Uruguayan national team who finished fourth, the South American team played Israel, Italy and Sweden.

Remaining relatively unchanged for just under 20 years, Cuauhtémoc stadium was expanded to 46,000 for the 1986 World Cup, and this time it played a much larger role in the second Mexican tournament. Home to defending World Champions Italy during the group stages, it also hosted one round of 16, a quarter final and even the third-place play-off.

Having demonstrated its credentials as one of Mexico’s finest football stadiums during both World Cups, it was a natural choice of venue in 2013 of the CONCACAF Under 20 Championships. Along with Estadio Olimpico de C.U, Estadio Cuauhtémoc once again underwent a programme of modernisation for 21st century, much to the delight of resident team Puebla F.C.
