Nueva Condomina History

Estadio Condomina was constructed in 2006 to replace Real Murcia’s old stadium which also shared the same name. Built on two different pieces of land, to avoid confusion the new stadium is known as Nueva Condomina. The original stadium first opened in 1924, and despite a handful of renovations, after almost 80 years it was beginning to show its age.

Capable of seating 31,179, Estadio Nuevo Condomina almost doubled the capacity of the old Condomina which was capable of seating 16,800 upon closing. Designed by architect Jaime López Amor, the new stadium is fully-enclosed, covered and consists of a single-tiered of seating which forms one continuous bowl.

The inaugural football match at the stadium was an international friendly between Spain and Argentina. Held on October 11th 2006, the first goal at the stadium was scored by FC Barcelona’s midfielder Xavi. Real Murcia played Real Valladolid on 26th November 2006 during week 14 of the Segunda Division as their inaugural fixture.

Should the situation ever require it then Estadio Nuevo Condomina’s capacity is capable of been increased to over 43,000 with the addition of a second tier throughout the stadium. Thought to be part of the original design, the city of Murcia formed part of an Iberian Bid (Portugal and Spain) to host the 2018 World Cup but the competition was awarded to Russia.
