Stadium Guide

History

Estádio Orlando Scarpelli is a 1961 constructed football stadium home to Brazilian football side Figueirense FC who are playing in Série A as of the 2014/2015 season. The inaugural match was played against Atlético Catarinense who spoiled the party by beating the home side four goals to nil, with the record attendance of 31,098 set 39 years later when Brazil took on Chile in an international friendly.

Named after the local entrepreneur and sportsman who became chairman of Figueirense Futebol Cluube in the 1940s, Orlando Scarpelli donated the land in the Strait neighborhood which the stadium is located and is regarded as an icon of the club’s history. The stadium retains its original shape to this day, although it has undergone several renovations over the years, most notably post-millennium.

In 1999 to prepare for the new decade Estadio Scarpelli’s playing facilities were upgraded with new changing rooms added, new dugouts and revamped tunnel. For spectators the match day experience was targeted with the club electing to improve access to the stadium with new electronic turnstiles, more concourse areas to eat and drink, and improved restroom facilities.

In 2005 Orlando Scarpelli Stadium was converted to all seating with dark green plastic seats added around the ground to reflect the club’s traditional secondary colour. Although this reduced the capacity to just under 20,000 the atmosphere hasn’t suffered with the stadium awarded the title of “Brazil’s Cauldron” one season after the numerous high attendances and passionate home support.
