Stadium Guide

History

Constructed over a period of less than two years beginning in 1995 for the 1996 Asian Winter Games , the inauguration was held on 4th February to coincide with the opening ceremony of the tournament. Originally set to be hosted by North Korea, China stepped in at short notice but still managed to lead the medal tables with over 15 golds, 7 silvers and 15 bronzes.

Like a good majority of stadiums which are used to host matches of the Chinese Super League, Harbin Sports City Centre Stadium is a municipally owned set of facilities which means that in order for it to be cost-effective to the taxpayer it would have to be multi-purpose in nature.

Nevertheless Harbin Yi Tanf Football Club announced that they would be moving into the stadium on April 1st 2011. Certainly no connection with April Fool’s , some would perhaps argue that the quality of the pitch is a bit of joke after the club had to spent 800,000 yen repairing it for the final match of the 2012 season.

Yet to participate in Asia’s Premier competition, the Champions League, the highest level of football the Harbin Sports City Stadium has hosted is the Chinese Super League. Harbin Yiteng F.C earned promotion to the highest tier of football in China in the 2014 season after recording a second place finish in the China League One.
