Yellow Dragon Sports Center History

Huanglong Sports Center is a 51,000 capacity stadium which first opened in 2000 after a construction period of three years beginning in 1997. Fulfilling the local need for world-class sporting and recreational facilities the municipal council of Hangzhou constructed a multi-purpose sports arena complete with athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch.

In English the name Huanglong literally translates as “Yellow Dragon” and thus globally it is common to refer to the facilities collectively as Yellow Dragon Sports Center. Reportedly costing 160 Million RMB which converts to around 19 million USD, based on these numbers Huanglong certainly appears to be a very cost effective stadium.

Home to local side Hangzhou Greentown F.C since 2001, the highest level of club  football held at Huanglong Sports Center came during the 2011 season after Greentown qualified for the AFC Champions League. They were drawn with FC Seoul, Nagoya Grampus and Al-Ain.

Internationally, it was selected as one of five venues for the 2007 Women’s World Cup along with Tianjin Stadium, and Hongkou Sports Centre. In total Huanglong stadium hosted eight matches including the semi-final between United States and Brazil which attracted an impressive attendance of 47,818.
