King Fahd International Stadium History

King Fahd International Stadium first opened in 1987, and was subsequently used two years later as the centrepiece of the FIFA World Youth Championship which was hosted by Saudi Arabia. The final between Portugal and Nigeria attracted a virtual capacity crowd of of 65,000.

Designed by British based architects John Roberts & partners, the stadium is famous for its unique roof design which provides shade to each and every seat inside the ground over an area of 47,000 square feet.

Supported by 24 columns in a tent like design, the exterior shape of the King Fahd is one of the most iconic in Middle Eastern Football. In total the stadium cost an estimated $510 million dollars which when converted today makes it one of the most expensive stadiums in the world.

Expertly designed, and constructed with no expense spared, the stadium hasn’t really needed to undergo any major renovations since opening just under 30 years ago. The Royal Balcony was added in order to give King Fahd a place to watch the football from.

Fans of the FIFA Video Game series will undoubtedly recognise this stadium as it has been included in ever version of the game since FIFA 13. King Fahd International became a popular stadium to use online in the Ultimate Team mode due to the zero probability of inclement weather conditions!
