Nanjing Olympic Sports Stadium History

The stadium within Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre was built to host the 10th National Games of the People’s Republic of China which is a domestic athletics and sports competition contested between regions. Taking a total of three years to construct, building work commence on 28th January 2002, and opened on the 1st May 2005 just in time for the games.

Costing a reported RMB 869.8 million, the ground was designed by globally renown architects Populous who also lent a hand to the likes of Wembley Stadium, The Emirates and Benfica’s Stadium of Light amongst others. Consequently it has a certain European feel to it with sweeping lines and a curvaceous roof attached to the top.

Although envisioned as a multi-purpose sports stadium in recent years it has undoubtedly been used more frequently as a football ground. Home to Jiangsu Guoxin-Sainty F.C since 2007, the move to the stadium has coincided with the most successful spell in the club’s history beginning with promotion in 2008, and culminating with a Supercup win in 2013.

Jiangsu Guoxin-Sainty F.C have even managed to qualify for the group stages of the AFC Champions League which means that Nanjing Olympic Sports Stadium has hosted the highest level of football in Asia. Jiangsu were drawn against FC Seoul, Burriram United and Vegalta Sendai but were unable to reach the knock-out stages.
