Estadio Corona History

Nuevo Estadio Corona was officially inaugurated on November 11th 2009 with a match between resident team Club Santos Laguna and their Brazilian namesakes, Santos FC. Replacing the former Estadio Corona which first opened in 1970, the new ground took over two years to build and essentially doubled  the old capacity from 18,000 to an impressive 30,000.

Designed by architects HKS who have lend a hand to a number of American stadiums including their local team FC Dalla’s Toyota Stadium, Estadio Corona cost an estimated $100 million to build. Construction began on November 14th 2007 and took approximately 2 years to build which the opening ceremony attended by stars of global football including Franco Baresi, Gabriel Batistuta and three time World Cup Winner Pele.

On August 20th 2011 a serious incident occurred when gunshots were heard around the stadium during the 40th minute of a first division match between Santos and Monarcas Morelia. Spectators and players ran for cover but fortunately no one inside the stadium was injured after it transpired that the shooting occurred just outside the stadium at a police checkpoint.

Estadio Nuevo Corona is located at the heart of a wider sporting complex known as Territorio Santos Modelo or just TSM as it is commonly abbreviated to. As a modern ground, it features a mixture of both sporting and recreational facilities ranging from restaurants and bars, to a trophy room and clubhouse.

There are currently plans for phase 2 of TSM which will consist of a five star Hotel and a shopping centre. If required in the future the stadium’s capacity can easily be increased to 40,000 with the addition of a second tier. The original design means that this would be a relatively straightforward expansion process.
