The Otkrytie Arena or Spartak Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue located in the Tushino district of Moscow. Constructed in anticipation of the Russian hosted 2018 World Cup, the 42,000 capacity ground is set to open on the 5th of September 2014 and will be used by FC Spartak Moscow.
Otkrytie Arena first opened on the 27th August 2014 and is located on the former site of Tushino Airfield which is a general aviation airport located in the north-west of Moscow. Designed by AECOm and Dexter Moren Associates, the stadium’s inaugural match was held on the 5th September between the home side, Spartak Moscow and Serbian side Red Star Belgrade which resulted in a 1-1 draw.
Costing an estimated $430 million dollars (14 billion RUB), the stadium was financed privately by Spartak Moscow’s owner Leonid Fedun who invested funds into the company through his LUKoil Company. Prior to this Spartak has never owned their own stadium and although this is not uncommon in Russia, it is becoming increasingly rare in Europe as teams look to maximize their match-day revenues.
The club had previously sought to build their own stadium back in the early 1990s but the club was unable to raise the necessary capital after the city were unable to allocate sufficient public funds to support the project. Unlike some stadiums across Europe such Valencia’s Nou Mestalla Stadium which was halted by the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, the reduced interest rate actually benefited the club, ultimately reducing the total cost of the new stadium.
Spartak Stadium is set to be one of four stadiums used for the 2017 Confederations Cup and one of twelve stadiums used for the 2018 World Cup, both of which are set to be held in Russia. Along with Zenit Saint Petersburg’s New Stadium and Rubin Kazan’s Kazan Arena, Otkrytie Arena will be one of the newest stadiums built for the tournament with the Luzhniki Stadium which is set to host the final undergoing refurbishment rather than a rebuild.
The Otkrytie Arena is comprised of four stands: North, East, South and West.
