Rajamangala National Stadium History

Located within the Hua Mak Sports Complex within the Bang Kapi District of Bangkok, Rajamangala stadium is multi-purpose by nature and features an athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch.

Designed by the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University, the oldest educational institution in Thailand, Rajamangala Stadium was built to host the 1998 Asian Games which was held between December 6th and December 20th in Bangkok.

Commonly used to host athletics matches, the stadium has been home to the Thailand National Football Team since opening. Original capable of seating 65,000 supporters, plastic seating was installed on the concrete bleachers in preparation for the 2007 Asian Cup, reducing the capacity to just under 50,000.

Co-hosted by Thailand, Indoensia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, Rajamangala stadium hosted six group matches and a quarter final. Rajamangala Stadium has also hosted a number of other international sports competitions including the 1999 ASEAN University Games.

The stadium has been described as a larger and more dramatic version of Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium with its sweeping concrete lines, and elliptical shape.
