Sabah Al Salem Stadium History

The stadium was essentially constructed for the AFC Asian Cup in 1980 where it was used as the centrepiece of the tournament. As well as hosting matches throughout each stage of the competition, Sabah Al Salem Stadium also hosted the Final match between Kuwait and South Korea.

Attended by a full capacity crowd of 28,000 – an attendance record which is unlikely to be ever beaten, the hosts Kuwait defeated the Koreans by three goals to nil in empathic style.

To date this is the only major trophy won by the Kuwait National Team, and therefore Sabah Al Salem Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of the older football fans.

It is very much regarded as one of the country’s most iconic venues for this reason despite not being the country’s national stadium.
