Shah Alam Stadium History

The inaugural fixture at Shah Alam Stadium was played on 1st January 1990 between a select side from Selangor FA, and guests from Scotland, Dundee United. Resulting in a 1-1 draw, the match formed part of a friendly tournament which involved Bayern Munich, Leeds United and eventual winners Flamengo.

Designed by famous Malaysian architect Hijjaz Kasturi, the stadium is widely regarded as one of the most iconic venues in Asian football. Costing a reported RM 460 million, Shah Alam Stadium is undoubtedly on par with leading stadiums across Europe and North America.

The largest sports ground in Selangor State, and second largest in the country, the two frames which supports the roofs either side of the pitch form the longest free-standing arc in the world, and are truly a triumph of engineering.

Multi-purpose by nature with an athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch, Shah Alam Stadium forms part of a wider sports and entertainment complex. There’s even a racing kart track which is run by former Asian Formula 2000 driver Ng Wai Leong.

Resident football team Selangor FA continue to lease the stadium from Shah Alam City Council on an annual basis, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
