Stadion Zdzislawa Krzyszkowiaka History

The first version of Stadion Zdzislawa Krzyszkowiaka opened in 1960 and was capable of seating anywhere between 35,000-45,000 supporters through the use of uncomfortable wooden benches. When it was completely rebuilt between 2007 and 2008 to modern specifications, the capacity essentially halved to 20,247 although much to the delight of bums across Poland.

Municipally owned, the redesign retained the athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch despite being home to local football team Zawisza Bydgoszcz. On balance, this arrangement is probably fair however as not only is the stadium named after an Olympic Gold Medal Runner, it regularly hosts athletics competitions such as the 2004 European Cup and the 2008 Junior World Championships.

The highest level of football held at Zdzislawa Krzyszkowiaka is arguably the 2008 Euro qualification match against Finland on 2nd September 2006. This marked the first competitive National Game held at the stadium, having previously only hosted friendly games against the likes of Scotland, Ireland, Canada and even North Korea.

In terms of club football, a qualification game against Zulte Waregem  in 2014 for a place in the group stages of the Europa League is arguably the pinnacle so far. Zawisza Bydgoszcz successfully qualified after lifting the Polish Cup during the 2013/2014 season after defeating Zaglebie Lubin 6-5 on penalties when 120 minutes couldn’t separate the two teams.
