Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium History

Dating as far back as 1967 when the original ramshackle stadium was constructed at a cost of 1.5 million, many Asian sports historian regard Sultan Mohammad IV to be one of the oldest purpose-built football grounds in the continent, and certainly the oldest in Malaysia.

Built on a piece of land belonging to the Kelantan Football Association in a prime urban location, the stadium has at times been attributed to Archibald Leitch however considering he died in 1939 this is demonstrably untrue!

The ground is informally known as the “Red Warriors Stadium” after the colours of the home side Kelantan FA. In 2013 the stadium was ground shared with Tumpat FA, however the club folded the following season following severe financial troubles.

Between 2010 and 2012 Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium underwent a modest program of modernisation in order to update ageing ground which had long reached the age of 40.

The most notable improvement to arise of the work was the installation of a high-definition scoreboard which measures 6 metres high by 11 metres wide. The LCD scoreboard essentially functions as a video screen allowing for fans inside the stadium to see live replays.
