Ukraina Stadium History

Ukraina Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue which first opened on the 18th August 1963 with a football match between Karpaty Lviv and Lithuanian visitors FK Žalgiris which the home side lost by a single goal to nil. Used primarily for football matches since opening , the stadium took three years to build with numerous local companies contributing to the construction, with the project managed by the local Communist Party Secretary, Vasyl Mazur.

Originally known as the Druzhba Stadium which means “Friendship”, the capacity of the stadium peaked during the 1970s when Karpaty Lviv hosted Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv in matches of the Soviet Top League. An estimated 51,000 fans crammed into the municipally owned stadium, with 50,000 fans also attending an exhibition match against Brazilian side Palmeiras during the first half of the decade.

During the 1990s the ground was renovated in preparation for the club’s participation in the 1999-2000 UEFA Cup with the capacity reduced to 28,051 all seating as to comply with the European competition’s more stringent stadium safety legalisation. Karpaty Lviv sadly failed to progress past the first round losing to Swedish Side Helsingborg on penalties but made the group stages of the Europa League in the 2010-2011 season.

After defeating Galatasary against all odds in the play-off match, the club were drawn against three more European Giants in the Group Stages of the tournament. The Stadium which was renamed the Ukrainia Stadium in 1990 by the club’s president, Karol Miklosz hosted PSG, Sevilla and most memorable of all, Borussia Dortmund, who defeated Karpaty 4-3 in a thrilling encounter.
