Vazgen Sargsyan Republic Stadium History

The original ground known as Dinamo Stadion first opened in 1935, and it remained open for 64 years before being replaced by the Republic Stadion in 1999. Dinamo was demolished and rebuilt to a more modern specification, and it was only after the ground was rebuilt that the Armenian National Team made the stadium its home.

A few months after reopening the ground’s name was renamed in honour of Vazgen Sargsyan, the Armenian Prime Minister who was assassinated in parliament. The ground’s origins and name have always been somewhat political with the original moniker “Dinamo Stadium” the direct result of Soviet Rule.

With a lack of funding Republican Stadium slowly became a set of outdated facilities by the end of the 20th century, and coming into the new millennium it desperately needed renovation. After initially struggling to raise the required capital back in 1995, the local council secured $3 million four years later.

The money was predominantly spent on the installation of modern plastic seating, and ensuring that all parts of the ground received adequate roof coverage. Better executive facilities and changing rooms were also installed as per recommendations from UEFA executive committee who preside over stadium requirements.

In recent years renovations have been less extensive with the installation of a new playing surface in August 2008 arguably the most notable occurrence. Conversion of some seating in the main stands to VIP Areas as per UEFA’s guidelines also resulted in a slight reduction in capacity from 14,968 to 14,403.
