Vinh Stadium or Sân vận động Vinh in Vietnamese is the home stadium of football side Sông Lam Nghệ An F.C who currently compete within V.League 1. Capable of accommodating an estimated 18,000 supporters, the stadium is multi-purpose by design.
By the turn of the millennium Vinh Stadium was beginning to show its age and it was clear for all to see that the ground desperately needed investment. Responding to the growing concern amongst fans, the Sports Department of Nghe An announced that 20,800 million VND worth of investment would be forthcoming.
Planning permission was granted on 23rd September 1999 and construction began the following year taking approximately three years to complete. Designed by local architects JSC, the stadium was rebuilt over a series of phases in order to minimise disruption to the sports schedule.
The first phase saw the construction of the new main stand which is fully covered and capable of seating 7,000 supporters, whereas the second phase focused on the facilities themselves such as the pitch and adjacent athletics track.
For resident side Sông Lam Nghệ An F.C the decision to renovate the stadium has proven to be very astute with the club winning Three League titles at the new facilities. The first two came during the 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 season, and the third came a decade later in 2011.
Vinh Stadium continues to receive investment as and when needed with a new drainage system installed in 2006, and better security systems added in 2011 when overcrowding occurred due to the high demand for tickets for the decisive game against Nguyen Huu Thang.
