The 1978 Fifa World Cup was the 11th version of the global football tournament with hosts Argentina continuing the trend of the home country putting in strong performances. Argentina were crowned World Champions after defeating Netherlands 3-1 in the final after extra time, becoming the fifth hosts to win the competition they hosted.
