Balewadi Stadium History

The stadium is known as Balewadi after the Pune suburb in which the wider Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex sits. The facilities were specifically constructed for the 1994 National Indian Games, and their continued use to this day is testament to the legacy of the Athletics Tournaments.

Multi-purpose by design, the stadium took approximately three years to build and features an international standard athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch.

Originally capable of accommodating 20,000 supporters today the official capacity is reduced to 12,000 following adjustments in line with developing health and safety recommendations.

The association of Balewadi Stadium with football has grown in recent years since the formation of the Indian Super League in 2013. FC Pune City formed a year later thanks to the combined efforts of ACF Fiorentina and Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan, and the club have resided at Balewadi ever since.

Stadion Balewadi hast hosted several international matches of the Indian national team including a 3-1 victory against Vietnam back in October 2010. More recently Indian recorded a 0-0 draw against Nepal on the 31st August 2015.
