Busan Asiad Main Stadium History

Busan Asiad Main Stadium was constructed to host matches for the 2002 World Cup and the 2002 Asian Games. Multi-purpose by design, the pitch features an athletics track around its perimeter which slightly detracts from the experience for football fans, however as a municipally owned stadium it the result of a balancing act between utility and cost.

Constructed at a cost of 226,9 billion won, the stadium forms part of larger sporting complex which serves the city of Busan. In total it took seven years and eight months to build, with the ceremonial breaking of the ground occurring back in  November 1993.

Despite being the third largest of Korea’s venues, Busan Asiad Main Stadium only hosted three matches of the World Cup in total. All of the games played belonged to the group stages as well rather than the knock out phases. In chronological order they games played at Busan Asiad were: Paraguay v South Africa (2-2), Republic of Korea v Poland (2-0), and France v Uruguay (0-0).

After the conclusion of the World Cup, Busan IPark moved into the stadium and have made it their permanent home ever since. The highest level of club football played at Busan Asiad Main Stadium to date appears to be the AFC Champions League. Busan reached the quarter finals of the 2005 edition but were unable to overcome Al-Ittihad Jeddah.
