Estadio El Toralín History

Estadio El Toralín first opened on 5th September 2000 with an inaugural match between the home side SD Ponferradina and visitors Celta de Vigo. The new stadium replaced the club’s former home Fuentesnuevas which was unpopular amongst fans due to its out of town location, The fact that it was built in 1975 and was beginning to shows its age certainly didn’t help either.

Constructed very much on a budget when SD Ponferradina were languishing in the third tier of Spanish football, Estadio El Toralín has undergone two major renovations since opening at the turn of the millennium.

The first expansion occurred when the club were promoted to the Segunda Division on the back of a second placed finish during the 2005/2006 Segunda Division B season. Over 6,000 additional seats were installed, and additional executive and press facilities were added in line with the league’s requirements.

The second expansion was the result of Ponferradina drawing Real Madrid in the first knock-out phase of the  2011/2012 Copa del Rey. Anticipating a cash windfall through TV money, and a full-house, the capacity was increased to 8,800 and the small club from the north-west of Spain fought bravely to a two nil defeat after goals from Callejon and Ronaldo.

As El Toralín was designed to meet UEFA’s elite stadium criteria, the stadium has ended up hosting a handful of international matches of the men’s Under 21s team. So far the ground has hosted qualification matches Euro 2002, 2009 and 2011 against Bosnia, Poland and Liechtestein respectively.
