Estádio Manoel Barradas History

Estádio Manoel Barradas is a multi-purpose stadium which is owned and primarily used by football team, Esporte Clube Vitória, who are one of the largest teams within the state of Bahia. Constructed in the 1980s on land donated by the at the time mayor of Salvador, Clériston Andrade, the stadium is named in honour of the former president of the club, Manoel Barradas.

The inaugural match was played against Vitória and one of the country’s most famous club’s, Santos FC on the 9th November 1986, with a refurbishment occurring less than five years after opening in 1991. To mark the refurbishment, a second friendly game was held against Paraguayan side Club Olimpia although the record attendance of 51,756  was set years later in 1999 against Atlético Mineiro.

Known as simply Barradão to fans, the opening of the stadium coincided with one of the most successful periods in Vitória’s history with the club dominating the regional league, winning more titles in two decades than they done so previously in the club’s 90 year existence. The 500th game was played on October 30th 2010 against Vasco da Gama with records indicating an impressive 70% win rate for the Salvadorian based team.

For the 2014 World Cup EC Bahia’s Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova was chosen ahead of Estádio Manoel Barradas to represent both the city of Salvador and the state of Bahia throughout the tournament. Purpose built for the competition, sadly Barradão couldn’t compete with the more modern stadium, although some believe that the taxpayers money could have been better spent renovating the older stadium.
