Fatorda Stadium or officially Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium is the largest international standard stadium in the state of Goa. Capable of accommodating 19,500 supporters, it was actually the second smallest football ground going into the 2015 Indian Super League season.

Fatorda Stadium History

Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium first opened in 1989 as a multi-purpose  stadium in order to satisfy the city of Goa’s demand for high-level sports. Municipally owned, the first iteration of the stadium was constructed in an impressive period of 6 months.

Originally conceived as a purpose-built football ground, less than a year after opening it was redeveloped as a Cricket ground in order to host both popular sports. By 25th October 1989 Fatorda Stadium hosted is first ever One Day International Cricket match between Australia and Sri Lanka.

Despite the Indian Super League only forming in 2013 and the fact that it was redeveloped soon after opening, Fatorda Stadium has long developed its reputation as one of India’s Premier footballing venues.

It has long hosted World Cup qualification matches of the Indian National Team and club games the AFC Asian Cup. During the 2007/2008 I-League football season no less than four Goan clubs were using the Fatorda stadium.

When FC Goa moved into Fatorda at the start of the inaugural ISL season, the stadium was upgraded to FIFA’s international specialisation. A new roof was installed, new floodlights were erected and almost every facility was modernised, cementing its reputation as the country’s finest grounds.
