Gwangyang Football Stadium History

Gwangyang Football Stadium was originally scheduled to open in September 1992, but was delayed until 4th March 1993 when the inaugural match took place. Held between Atom’s Posco who later go on to become the Pohang Steelers, and Dalian Shide F.C, the new stadium may not be the largest in South Korea, but it may well be one of the most popular.

Capable of seating 14,284, Gwangyang Football Stadium is the second purpose-built football ground in Korea, after Pohang Steel Yard which opened three years previously. Municipally owned, the stadium has been home to the Jeonnam Dragons since the club formed in time for the start of the 1995 K-League Classic season.

Often referred to as the “Dragon Dungeon” by supporters, the new stadium has been the one constant to the team who have encountered many changes ranging from the club’s name (Chunnam to Jeonnam) to the members of staff who manage the Dragons.

The closest Jeonnam Dragons have come to winning the K League Classic was in the 1997 season when they finished runners up, although as a consolation they helped themselves to a FA Cup – a trophy they would later win back to back in 2006 and 2007.

The highest level of football played at Gwangyang Football Stadium to date has been the group stages of the AFC Champions League which they qualified for in 2007 and 2008 following the FA Cup victories. The club took on the likes of Kawasaki Frontale, Gamba Osaka and Melbourne Victory.
