Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium History

The sports complex in which Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium sits was constructed in 1993 on the site of the former Madras Zoo and cricket field. Costing an estimated 440 million Rupees to build, the project was built in a rapid time frame of  just 234 days or slightly under 8 months.

Municipally owned and multi-purpose by design, the main stadium was equipped with a 400m athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch. The sports complex contains many more facilities including: volleyball courts, boxing rings, dojos, gymnasiums and even Chess tables.

The stadium is one of several to be named after India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who emerged as a leader of the country’s independence movement after the death of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.

Since opening Stadion Jawaharlal Nehru has been home to the Tamil Nadu Regional team, and as of 2014 is now also home to the newly formed Chennaiyin F.C.

Forming one eighth of the Indian Super League, football attendances are predicted to double in the coming decade as the popularity of the sport grows.
