Kerkyra Stadium History

Kerkyra Stadium was constructed in 1961 to form part of the National Sports Centre which was designed to be the main sporting facilities of Corfu. Municipally owned, the stadium’s capacity peaked in the 1970s when the record attendance of 5,000  was set during a match between AO Kerkyra and PAS Giannina in 1974.

The stadium has remained relatively Spartan since opening, and has only undergone a handful of renovations in the 60 years or so since it was built. Currently it consists of two stands which sit at either side of the pitch, and together they are capable of seating a total of 2,685 supporters. The main stand houses the changing room facilities was constructed first, and then it was later joined by the second stand in 1973.

The most recent renovations have all occurred since the turn of the millennium, and they include the installation of floodlights in 2003, and the creation of a canopy roof structure for the main stand in 2007. Currently there are plans to construct a new 1,230 capacity stand behind the northern goal-end which will be adjoined with the two extant sections of seating to form a horseshoe.

Progress on the expansion has been non-existent, and in 2010 a temporary stand capable of seating 200 supporters was erected in its place. Whether or not this is merely a short term solution or if it signals the fact that the project is abandoned remains to be seen. However with the Greek economy as it is, combined with AOK Kerkyra’s levels of debts the delays are likely to be the result of financial difficulties.
