Oleksiy Butovskyi Vorskla Stadium History

Stadium Vorskla dates back to the early part of the 20th century and has been home to Vorskla Poltava since the club’s formation in 1955. Constructed as a multi-purpose sports venue (Harvest) by the local city government, 1951 is the official opening date listed with regards to the stadium but prior to this the site of the ground has been used for sporting activities for just under 40 years, from at least May 1913.

Originally large enough for 7,500 standing spectators, the stadium has fluctuated in size over the years with renovations occurring during the late 1960s and early 70s  essentially doubling Vorskla’s capacity from 17,000 to around 30,000 plus. Phase 1 occurred during the 1962-1963 season which added seats, and then phase 2 occurred over a six year period starting in 1968 with work carried out in pieces as to not disrupt the sporting calendar.

First known as Stadion Harvest, the ground became known as Vorskla in 1990 with the club’s participation in the 1997-1998 UEFA Cup qualification rounds spearheading large scale redevelopment of facilities.

Work actually began on modernising the ground in 1995 to anticipate more stringent stadium safety legalisation set to be introduced, but the revenue from European Football allowed the club to add finishing touches such as under-soil heating and an new electronic scoreboard.

In 2008 Alexei Butovo, a former Russian Imperial Army General, was added to the stadium’s official name becoming Alexei Butovo Vorskla Stadium. The name change occurred coincided with the ground hosting the 2008 Ukrainian Super Cup which was held outside of Odessa for the first time in the competitions history as FC Chornomoret’s Stadium was completely demolished and rebuilt.
