History

Sarawak Stadium was constructed over a two year period beginning in 1995 on a plot of land adjacent to the 1991 built Stadium Negeri.

Together they form the backbone of the city’s main sports complex and through their different capacities, 40,000 and 26,000 respectively they offer great flexibility to local sports teams.

Despite the fact that Sarawak Stadium was built specifically to host matches of the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championships, the new venue wasn’t purpose built for football, and instead features an athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch like Negeri.

Costing an estimated 120 million Malaysian ringgit and funded entirely by the Sarawak State Government, it is perhaps understandable why the stadium would need to be multi-purpose by design and have to accommodate as many sports as possible.

Recognised as one of Malaysia’s most modern sports arenas, Sarawak Stadium hosted the 2007 Champions Youth Cup. This friendly competition saw the national youth side take on academies from such esteemed European clubs as Chelsea, Bayern Munich and PSV Eindhoven.
