Saturn Stadium History

Saturn Stadium is a 14,685 capacity purpose-built football ground which was built in 1999 to be used by local side FC Saturn Moscow Oblast who are located within a suburb of Moscow. FC Saturn were originally founded in 1946 but folded in 2011 after racking up untenable amounts of debt. With their stadium unoccupied, FC Torpedo Moscow opted to lease the stadium during the the 2013-2014 season as they chased promotion to the Russian Premier League.

Constructed on the site of the old “Central Park Stadium” which consisted of two aging grandstands capable of seating 10,000, FC Saturn in conjunction with Ramenskoje council formulated plans in 1998 to replace the multi-purpose sports arena. Completely rebuilt as a football stadium across a two year period, the new ground remains one of the best examples of a small modern day football stadium in Europe.

Two years after opening the Governer of the Moscow Oblast Region announced that a small series of improvements to Saturn’s Stadium would be implemented after the Russian Football Federation updated their stadium legislation for the coming decade. This saw the ground receive under soil heating and improved floodlights which many saw as the final pieces of the modern day stadium puzzle.

With FC Saturn reestablishing themselves in the bottom tier of Russian Football and FC Torpedo Moscow failing to usurp the larger teams in the country, neither club has hosted European Football at the stadium. Anzhi Makhachkala have however played matches of the Europa League at Saturn Stadium after UEFA deemed the Dagestan Region unsafe due to the threat of terrorism during the 2012/2013 season.
