Stade Mohammed V History

First opened on 6th March 1955 with a capacity of 30,000 and named after Marcel Cerdan who is widely regarded as France’s greatest ever boxer, Stade Marcel Cerdan was renamed a year later to Stade D’honneuer after Morocco achieved independence.

The stadium’s capacity and sized peaked towards the 1980s after the ground was renovated in preparation for the 1983 Mediterranean Games which were set to be held in Casablanca. Beginning in the late 1970s, the stadium reopened in 1981 with a capacity of 80,000 which was more than double the original size.

Renamed to Stade Mohamed V, it’s current name, during renovation works, an electric scoreboard was also added as was state of the art gymnasium and swimming pool. The addition of these facilities reflected the stadium’s multi-purpose nature despite being associated with the Moroccan National Team.

It famously hosted the 1988 African Cup of Nations after Morocco stepped in after Zambia dropped out as hosts. Stade Mohamed V held the final which saw Cameroon defeat Nigeria 1-o to lift their second Championship.

The most recent renovation of Stade Mohamed V occurred in 2000 after Moroccan bid to host the 2010 World Cup. The capacity was reduced to the current 52,000 capacity as per Fifa guidelines and green and red coloured seats were installed which gave the national stadium more of an identity.
