Estadio Caliente History

Caliente Stadium first opened on November 2007 with an initial capacity of just 13,333. Designed by architect Héctor Troncoso-Parraga to be built over three phases, the first expansion occurred less than a year later in March 2008 which increased the capacity to 21,000.

Financed by Mexican politician and businessman Jorge Hank Rhon, the stadium was built to bring a professional soccer club to the city of Tijuana. Only a few months before construction was complete Club Tijuana were formally founded in January 2007.

As the Mexican first division required stadiums to have a capacity of over 15,000 for all league matches, Club Tijuana’s ground was initially ineligible. However by the time the local side were promoted to the Primera Division in 2011, the second phase of renovation work was completed which increased the capacity to 21,000.

To date the highest level of football held at the stadium was an Under 20s match between Mexico and Paraguay which resulted in a 0-0 draw. In terms of largest sporting event, Estadio Caliente hosted a boxing match between Erik Morales and Francisco Lorenzo on 18th December 2010.
