Estadio Corregidora de Querétaro History

Dating back to the early 1980s when local governor Rafael Camacho Guzmán announced his desire to construct a purpose-built football stadium, Estadio Corregidora initially seemed an unlikely proposition for the city of Querétaro. In fact, it wasn’t until Colombia dropped out of hosting the 1986 World Cup due to economic reasons, and Mexico stepped in as hosts that the project received a renewed impetus.

Constructed soon began on March 17th 1983 and finished approximately 20th months later on December 31st 1984. The inaugural match was held a month or so later on 5th February 1985 between the Polish and Mexican national teams. The opening goal was scored by captain Tomas Boy Espinoza and the stadium was christened in style with a 5 nil victory to Mexico.

The 6th largest host venue of the World Cup, Estadio Corregidora hosted three group matches all featuring West Germany, and one round of 16 between Denmark and Spain.

Designed by architect Luis Alfonso Fernandez, the stadium has been described as being very European and like a smaller Estadio Azteca, and during the tournament was applauded for its excellent playing surface. It is named after the heroine of Mexican Independence Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez’ nickname.

The most recent renovations occurred in 2011 in preparation for the Under 17s World Cup. The capacity was expanded slightly from 43,130 to 45,575 and improved floodlights were installed as well as the addition of a large 38m² screen for replays and the scoreboards.
