Aleppo International Stadium History
The inaugural fixture at Aleppo International Stadium was played on 3rd April 2007 between resident side Al-Ittihad, and Turkish giants Fenerbahçe S.K. Resulting in an entertaining 2-2 draw, Syrian President Bashar Al Assad who conducted the opening ceremony was one of 75,000 spectators in attendance.
Based on a design by Polish architects Stanis?aw Ku? which was later adapted by Syrian engineers, construction on Aleppo International Stadium remarkably began way back in 1980, and was originally scheduled for completion in 1987.
Due to financial difficulties combined with Geopolitical instability, the project was delayed by two decades, and from construction to opening took just over 27 years. Costing an estimated $30 million dollars, the project was resumed by the Syrian Government in 2003.
Situated within the al-Hamadaniah Sports City towards the south of Aleppo city centre, Aleppo Stadium is multi-purpose by design. Featuring an international sized athletics track around the perimeter of the pitch, seating is arranged across three tiers with the lower and upper sections separated by executive boxes.
As Syria’s largest stadium, the ground has occasionally been used to host the football matches of the Syrian National team although it is more commonly used by Al-Ittihad SC of the Premier League.
