Euro 1996 took place between 8th and 30th of June 1996 and was held by perennial underachievers England, although the Three lions defeat by footballing rivals Germany on penalties in the Semi-finals marked a high-point of the country’s success in recent years.

The side managed by Terry Venables saw Alan Shearer claim top goal scorer with 5 goals and three players David Seaman, Paul Gascoigne and Steve McManaman all making the team of the tournament.

The final held at the old Wembley Stadium saw Germany defeat Czech Republic 2-1 after extra time with two goals by Oliver Bierhoff.
