How the Champions League League Phase Changes Away-Day Planning

The Champions League no longer gives supporters three away trips against the same opponents they face at home. Under the league-phase format, every club plays eight different teams, with four fixtures at home and four away.

That creates more variety for travelling fans, but it also makes preparation more important. A club can visit four countries with different travel demands.

The Draw Is Only the Beginning

The 2026/27 league phase is the third season of the 36-team format. Each club faces two opponents from each of the four seeding pots, playing one at home and one away.

The draw reveals the destinations, but supporters should not book immediately. UEFA publishes the schedule after the draw, assigning every fixture a date and kick-off time. Until that information is confirmed, a match may fall on either of two evenings.

This season’s opening round ran from 8 to 10 September. The remaining matchdays continue through 27 January 2027, so one campaign can involve early-autumn evenings and difficult winter journeys.

Four Away Trips Require Four Different Plans

A trip to Milan cannot be organised like a visit to Istanbul, Madrid, or Bodø. Airport choice, public transport, weather, and the stadium’s location all change.

Start by finding the ground before choosing a hotel. Our San Siro stadium guide explains that the ground sits outside central Milan but has a dedicated stop on Metro Line 5. Accommodation near a connected station may be more useful than a cheaper room with an awkward journey after the match.

Apply the same test elsewhere. Check how late public transport operates and any post-match crowd controls.

The Football Is Only Part of the Planning

Once the route and ticketing arrangements are clear, attention can turn to the football. Recent form, injuries, and likely line-ups will shape the discussion before departure.

Some fans will also follow Champions League betting when comparing forthcoming fixtures. The markets provide a snapshot of expectations around each match, and prices can change as team news becomes clearer. While those assessments can add context to a fixture, they cannot account for every tactical adjustment, injury concern or moment that may influence the outcome on the pitch.

Supporters planning the trip should therefore treat match expectations and travel preparations as separate considerations. One concerns the football itself, while the other determines how smoothly the journey unfolds.

Kick-Off Times Can Change the Trip

Most league-phase games begin at either 18:45 or 21:00 Central European Time. That difference can decide whether a same-day flight is realistic or another hotel night is required.

An early kick-off leaves little margin for an afternoon arrival. A late one can finish close to 23:00 local time before queues and the walk back to public transport.

Work backwards from the final whistle. Check the last metro, train, or airport connection, then allow time for leaving the away section. Visiting supporters may be held inside after some fixtures, so the fastest journey shown by an app should not be treated as guaranteed.

January Needs a Different Approach

The league phase now extends beyond Christmas. Matchdays seven and eight take place on 19 and 20 January and 27 January 2027, respectively.

Those dates bring shorter daylight hours and a greater chance of weather disrupting flights or rail services. Flexible bookings become useful for destinations requiring a connection.

UEFA’s official 2026/27 fixture list brings every league-phase date, kick-off time, and result together. Check it alongside the clubs’ ticketing information before buying anything non-refundable.

The format gives supporters four distinct away days instead of three repeated group-stage journeys. That is an improvement for anyone who travels to discover different grounds and football cities. It rewards fans who treat every destination as a new trip rather than repeating the same booking routine.
