Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium History

The inaugural fixture at Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium was played on the 23rd September 1983 between the Brunei National Team, and Sheffield United who are often cited as the oldest remaining football club in the world.

The match ended in a 1-nil win for the visitors despite the effects of long distance travelling, however the rematch which was held the following day resulted in a 1-1 draw. The date of the 23rd September was chosen to coincide with Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien’s 70th Birthday.

Costing an estimated $100 million Singaporean dollars, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah stadium’s construction was notable for being partially funded by the public’s generous donations.

Although the final amount raised only amounted to 1.1 % of the total cost of the stadium, the willingness of the Brunei Citizens to donate indicated to the Youth and Sports Department the latent demand for International Class Sports facilities within the sovereign state.

Designed by SAA Partnership architects, the stadium took slightly over three years to build, beginning in August 1990. Primarily used to host the football matches of Brunei DPMM F.C who compete within Singapore Football, the ground also hosts the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy.
