Markaziy Stadium (Namangan) History
Markaziy Stadium first opened in 1989 with a capacity of 35,000 making it at the time one of the largest grounds in Uzbekistan. The capacity of Markaziy has since decreased following large scale refurbishment, and modernisation to the facilities in line with more stringent safety regulations.
The largest of all renovations in the stadium’s history occurred over a two year period between 2012 and 2014. Beginning to show its age Navbahor F.C announced their plans to renovate their stadium in 2011, and soon after secured a two year lease on Kosonsoy Stadium.
The stadium reopened on 29th May 2014 where it successfully hosted the annual athletics competition known as “Barkamol avlod 2014”.
Scaled down in size slightly, the capacity was reduced to 22,000 after the installation of modern plastic seating in the place of the outdated concrete bleachers.
The inaugural football match at the newly renovated Markaziy Stadium was played on 14th June 2014 between Navbahor and Olmaliq FK. Played out in front of a crowd of 15,850, the home side christened their stadium with an impressive 3-1 victory.
