Estadio Luis “Pirata” de la Fuente History
Upon first opening on March 19th of 1968 the stadium was officially known as Estadio Veracruz, however it was later changed in tribune to Luis de la Fuente who died of a heart attack in 1972. Born in the city of Veracruz, he is regarded as one of the most successful Mexican footballers of all time playing for a host of Mexico’s biggest clubs and Racing Santander in Spain.
Whilst the basic structure of Estadio Luis Fuente remains relatively unchanged since the late 1960s, it has undergone several refurbishments over in recent years. Most notably one occurred during the 2003 and 2004 season which saw the exterior remodelled with an elegant façade, and the interior properly branded with the club’s colours.
Know colloquially as “The Pirate” which was Luis Fuente’s nickname, the ground has predominantly been used to host football matches of Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz since opening. Since the turn of the millennium however, it has become something of a multi-purpose stadium holding athletics events and music concerts.
Beginning with the Premundial Women’s Under 20 Championships in 2006 followed by the National Olympiad in 2007, and more recently the XX11 Central American and Caribbean Games in 2014, Estadio de la Fuente is developing its reputation as more than just a standard football ground.
