Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium History
The international stadium within Terengganu Sports Complex was constructed over a two year period beginning in 2008. Built in order to host the 2008 Sukma Games, the opening ceremony of the competition was held on 10th May 2008 by stadium’s namesake Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu.
Costing a reported 270 Malaysian ringgit, the new stadium was designed to replace the 1960s built Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium and essentially become the state of Terengganu’s main sports venue.
Outsourcing the construction of the ground to South Korean workforce appeared to be a financially prudent decision, however doubts were raised after a large section of the roof collapsed on 2nd June 2009 less than a year after Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium had opened.
Thankfully resulting in no casualties, an investigation later showed that the accident was the result of a design flaw combined with inappropriate materials.
The stadium’s roof was later remodelled in a similar style to that of Malaysia’s national stadium – Bukit Jalil.
