King Abdullah International Stadium History
Plans to build a brand new sports stadium for the city of Jeddah dated back to the 1990s, however it wasn’t until 2012 that construction work on the much anticipated stadium began.
Designed to replace the 24,000 capacity Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium, King Abdullah Sports City features numerous sports facilities including the large 62,241 capacity International Stadium.
The inaugural fixture at King Abdullah International Stadium was the King’s Cup Final played on 1st May 2014 in front of a capacity crowd. The match saw Al-Shabab defeat Al-Ahli SC 3-0 in order to claim their third League Cup trophy.
After the Cup Final the opening ceremony continued with a festival and fireworks display regarded as one of the best in the history of the country. The event even included a speech by The King of Saudi Arabia who wishes his subjects the best.
