Ashgabat Stadium History
Ashgabat Stadium officially opened on 28th October 2011 after a construction period of approximately two years. The opening ceremony was held a day after Turkmenistan’s Independence Day, and consisted of a colourful celebration complete with a traditional fireworks display.
Attended by President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, who allocated the funding for the stadium back in 2009, the 20,000 capacity stadium took approximately two years to construct.
Designed by Turkish architectural company Polimeks, the stadium is multi-purpose by design, and sits within the centre of the wider sports complex which contains numerous facilities. These include a gymnasium, tennis courts, and swimming pools amongst other halls.
Although the pitch is surrounded by an athletics track, Ashgabat Stadium is still predominantly used to host football matches. It is currently home to no less than three sides: FC Ashgabat, FC Altyn Asyr, and FC Ahal.
The record attendance to date was set on 29th April 2015 when a capacity crowd of 20,000 attended a AFC Champions League match between FC Ahal and Qadsia from Kuwait. FC Ahal’s qualified for the competition for the first time ever after finishing runners-up in the 2014 Ýokary Liga.
