Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Kochi) History
The inaugural Indian Super League match of Kerala Blasters F.C was held on 6th November 2014 against visitors F.C Goa. Prior to the formation of the new league several smaller football teams had played their home games at Jawaharlal Nehru including Kerala F.C, FC Kochini and Kerala Stikers.
Originally constructed as a multi-purpose stadium, since opening Jawaharlal Nehru had become closely associated with cricket, and for its reputation as one of the nosiest cricket fields due to the unique gabled design of the roof.
Since Kerala Blasters have made Kaloor International Stadium their home, attendances for football matches have increased greatly. In the ISL’s first season, an the average attendance of 47,427 was achieved which puts the figure as the highest in the world outside of Europe’s largest leagues.
The record attendance to date came on the 30th November 2014 when Kerala Blasters took on rivals Chennaiyin FC. An estimated 61,323 supporters travelled to the ground to watch the match in what is a fantastic piece of news for the sport of football in India.
When Kochi was selected as one of six host cities for the Under 17s World Cup in 2017 there were suggestions that Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium would be the venue used. This was later confirmed in December 2013 after FIFA announced that India were the successfully bidders.
