Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium History
Tianjin Olympic Centre Stadium is a multi-purpose sports stadium which has constructed to host both the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and some of the Football Preliminaries for the 2008 Summer Olympics which was set to be held in Beijing.
In total Tianjin Stadium hosted five matches of the World Cup including a semi-final between Norway and eventual tournament winners Germany. Despite having the largest capacity amongst all of the five venues, the purpose-built Hongkou Stadium was chosen to host the final.
Construction on the modern Chinese stadium began in August 2003 and ended exactly four years later on August 2007, making the project a relatively normal in terms of turnaround time.
Costing a reported 1.5 billion Yuan, the stadium is colloquially known as The Water Drop due to its exterior shape and was designed by architects AXS Satow.
It has been used since 2011 by local side Tianjin Teda FC for their home fixtures, and in this time period it has seen the club lift the Chinese FA Cup and participate in the AFC Champions League. In 2012 they were drawn with Seongnam FC, Nagoya Grampus and Central Coast Mariners but were unable to qualify from the group.
