Stadium Guide

History

The stadium within Guiyang Olympic Sports Centre complex first opened in 2010 and was constructed over a two year period beginning in May 2008. Whether or not it was inspired by Beijing hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics remains to be seen, however one thing for sure is that it’s certainly helped to address any perceptions of a sporting imbalance in China.

Constructed as a multi-purpose stadium complete with running track around the outside of the playing field, the lion’s share of the stadium’s usage comes from Soccer matches. Originally based in Shanghai, the club relocated to Guizhou, and changed their name to Guizhou Renhe in 2012.

To date the highest level of football held within Guiyang Olympic Stadium has been group matches of the AFC Champions League. After securing back to back qualifications for the tournament as a result of two fourth placed finishes in 2012 and 2013, Guizhou Renhe have faced some big teams.

They have faced the likes of Australian teams Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers, and Japanese sides Kawasaki Frontale and Kashiwa Reysol in recent years. This has greatly added to the prestige of the club, and to a lesser extent even the stadium itself.
