Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium History

Designed very much in the outdoors mould to take advantage of India’s warm climate, the stadium is largely uncovered with only the main stand of the stadium receiving coverage from the roof.

Comprised of a single-tier of seating which stretches across all four sides of the pitch, the stadium is essentially bowl-shaped. Capable of accommodating an estimated 35,000 only a fraction of these are seated with the majority of the stands featuring terrace places.

Unusual for a stadium which was constructed in 2007, it appears as if a conversion to all-seating will occur by the Summer of 2017. This is because Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium has been  chosen as one of six Indian venues for the Under 17 Fifa World Cup.

Predominantly used to host the football matches of NorthEast United F.C, Sarusajai Stadium has also hosted International matches of the Indian National Team.

The first such fixture was a friendly against Malaysia on 13th November 2011 which was attended by 20,000 supporters. The game resulted in a 1-1 draw, and subsequent matches have since been arranged.
