Azadi Tehran Stadium History

Construction on Iran’s National Stadium began on 1st October 1970, and essentially lasted for 3 years and 17 days in total. Originally known as Aryamehr Stadium, the sports arena was renamed to Azadi meaning freedom after the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Forming part of the wider Azadi Sports Complex, Azadi International Stadium consists of a FIFA approved football pitch, and an athletics track which conforms to Olympic standards. Designed to host the 1974 Asian Games Aryamehr Stadium was envisioned as a multi-purpose arena from the beginning.

The record attendance to date was set on 22nd November during a play-off match against Australia for a place in the group stages of 1998 World Cup.

An estimated 128,000 football fans crammed into the stadium to see Iran draw 1-1 with the Aussies, the perfect first leg result which ultimately helped the country to qualify for France 1998.

After large scale renovations in 2003 which reduced the capacity from 120,000 to a more comfortable 84,000 it appears unlikely that the record will ever be beaten. A new high-definition scoreboard and replay screen was added in 2004.
